What is a national identity card? What qualifications are required to obtain a National Identity Card and what must be done to obtain it?

1) What is National Identity Card?
National Identity Card is a multi-purpose certificate with biometric facility including national identity containing personal and biological details of the citizens.

2) What is the purpose of establishing National Identity Card and Registration Department?
To provide multi-purpose national identity card with national identity number on the basis of data and records prepared by electronic system with open personal and biological details of Nepali citizens and to manage, use and control safe storage.

  •  To formulate the necessary infrastructures, policies and laws for issuing national identity cards.
  • To include the services provided by the Government of Nepal to the Nepali citizens in the national identity card system and to use the data and records obtained from that system in policy and planning.

5) What qualifications are required to get National Identity Card and what should be done to get it?
     The following qualifications are required to obtain a national identity card:
Completed 16 years of age
Certificate of Nepali citizenship taken.
The person eligible to obtain the identity card should apply before the body or official designated by the National Identity Card and Registration Department in the prescribed format. While submitting the application, the person who wants to get the identity card or the body or officer specified by the department should provide digital photograph, digital lapel print with 10 finger lines of both hands, personal and biological details including signature.

6) What are the benefits of Nepali national identity card?
     Citizens will be able to use the National Identity Card for the following purposes:
 As a person's national identity card.
 As a voter ID card.
As a basis for receiving all kinds of public services.

8) Where is the national identity card distributed?
Identity cards are prepared from the National Identity Card and Registration Department in Singha Durbar and distributed in each district from the District Administration Offices or from the place specified by the National Identity Card and Registration Department.

9) What is biological and personal identity?
In the context of a national identity card, biological identity is defined as a photo of a person and a fingerprint. Personal identity includes a person's name, surname, address, age, gender, and other personal details.

10) What are chips and why are they used?
Chips are electronic devices that store data on the back of a national identity card. Adequate amounts of details and data of various natures can be stored in chips. In addition to the details related to the national identity card, other details such as PAN, driver's license, etc. to keep

11) How to ensure the confidentiality of personal details in the national identity card
        Is done?
In case of need, the person concerned can use his / her details but the privacy is ensured so that various bodies can use it only as prescribed by law.

12) How to get a copy if national identity card is lost?
If the National Identity Card is lost, worn out or cannot be used for any reason or if it cannot be used for any reason, the National Identity Card will be provided as a copy after verifying the records and submitting an application to the department through the concerned District Administration Office.
